Safety Sayings & Slogans

Effective (and safe!) communication is crucial to a successful work environment. Your staff needs to be able to easily remember important messages, and safety sayings and slogans are a great way to keep people engaged with the information. Believe it or not, we're exposed to anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 messages a day. Breaking through the clutter with a memorable safety saying will prove valuable in the long run.

Here are some tips and tricks when thinking of a safety saying or slogan for your work environment.

1. Keep it short and sweet. Aim for eight words or less. Anything longer will likely not be used or remembered by employees.
2. Positivity is key. Repeatedly saying negative messages in your workplace will only bring down the mood. Focus on encouraging positive behavior and actions rather than emphasizing what shouldn't be done.
3. Try to avoid jargon. Before coming up with a safety saying or slogan, ask yourself, 'would my parents understand this?' If the answer is no, try to stick to simpler language that everyone can easily understand.
4. Get creative. Using a cookie-cutter slogan will quickly get old, and employees won't be excited about saying something clich. Memorable slogans and sayings often include word repetition and rhyming. Safety topics are usually on the serious side, so making them approachable with a fun, creative slogan will get employees more excited. And, like most things in life, the funnier the better.
5. Include a surprise. Avoid common sense at all costs! Our brains easily get in the habit of guessing what's coming next, so using a safety slogan that contains unexpected information makes it easier for us to remember the information.

Here are some of our favorite examples:

  • Know safety, no injury. No safety, know injury.
  • Keep safety in mind. It will save your behind.
  • A spill, a slip, a hospital trip.
  • While on a ladder, never step back to admire your work.
  • Safety fits like a glove; try one on.

Once you've settled on an appropriate slogan for your work environment, use it a lot! Make stickers and posters, use it in emails and newsletters. Once it's well-established, change it up! You don't want employees getting too accustomed to the message. Happy brainstorming!
