S.A.F.E. Cards:
Think, Choose, Go, Train

Consider these three common examples for using S.A.F.E. Cards:

arrow New Employees
Think > You’ve got three new electricians from the hall today. They should be good electricians, but they’ve never worked on this site, and they’ve never worked for you.

Choose > Grab the “Old hand/New site” S.A.F.E. Card® from the General Health & Safety category.

Go >
Go about your regular daily business. When you see those three electricians...

Train >
Use the S.A.F.E. Card® to get them up to speed on specific hazards, PPE requirements, fall protection rules, the locations of safety and emergency equipment. Make them assets instead of potential liabilities.

arrow Hardhats
Think > Jim’s working on this project. He’s a great carpenter, but you’ve noticed that more often than not, his hardhat is protecting something other than his head.

Choose > Take the “Hardhats” S.A.F.E. Card® from the Personal Protective Equipment category and put it in your pocket.

Go >
Do the things you do. As you’re moving around the site and notice Jim...

Train >
Read through the material on the S.A.F.E. Card® with Jim. You might even make this a verbal warning (document it if you do, maybe in your Construction & Maintenance Daily Log). Regardless of the warning, you’ve reviewed the critical issues about hardhats and Jim knows that you and the company are serious about safety.

arrow Scaffolding
Think > Scaffolding is going up this early this week and you don’t have time for excuses or injuries.

Choose > Put one or both of the “Scaffolding” S.A.F.E. Cards® in your pocket.

Go >
You may want to read the cards quickly yourself to make sure that “all the ducks are in a row.” As you check on progress around the job you’re already talking to a couple guys here and a few employees there, take these opportunities to....

Train >
Read through one of those S.A.F.E. Cards®. Check for questions. Make sure everyone is on top of scaffold safety before an accident occurs.
